2 families unite in a new home

2 families unite and seek a home in which to unite with a desire to unite harmoniously; two families seek a home to become one. Our goal was to support individual family member’s needs and identities while inspiring opportunities to build new relationships. Some spaces are intended for gathering and interaction, while others serve as personal and private refuge.

Our design draws inspiration from the family’s East Coast roots on a sprawling lot in a quaint, secluded Highland Park neighborhood. Their new home features rooms uniquely designed for each family member. A shingle-style exterior sits atop a solid limestone watertable base (Buechel Stone.) This home enhances the unique fabric and character found within the neighborhood.

A Family Workshop organizes the family’s activities, from crafts, gift wrapping, homework, and much more. It has one of the full baths and facilities to serve the pool laundry needs. The amply-sized kitchen with two islands can stand on its own for entertaining or provide support for the rest of the home.

An independent sports court structure was considered as a part of the program. It was determined to combine this use with another similarly scaled space to make better use of the property. The four-car Garage does double duty as a sports court for the active lifestyle during inclement weather when two families seek a home to become one. A space outfit for basketball, soccer, floor hockey, or any activity can be enjoyed from the second-floor gallery. The lower level offers quiet seclusion for a yoga studio, theater, game room, wet bar, and enough space to entertain comfortably.
